Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group (VAG) — the same family as Volkswagen, Škoda and Porsche — and shares much of its key and immobiliser engineering across the group. Smaller models like the A1, A3 and Q3 are built on the MQB platform (shared with the VW Golf and Škoda Octavia), while larger models like the A4, A6, Q5 and Q7 sit on the MLB platform (shared with Porsche). Lose your only Audi key and the dealership’s usual answer is to order a pre-cut key directly from Germany — a process that can take 2 to 3 weeks. Because the car can’t be safely driven without a working key, that often means arranging a tow to the dealership and leaving your Audi there for the wait.

Key won't turn in the ignition at all?
That’s different from a lost or broken key — and a new key on its own won’t fix it. Audi shares much of its ignition barrel and steering-lock engineering with the wider Volkswagen Group, so a key that won’t turn (or a steering wheel that stays locked even with the correct key) is almost always a steering-lock fault inside the ignition barrel, not a key or chip problem.
